This 6ft x 5ft 6in Ultra Heavy Duty Closeboard Fence Panel is a great choice when you want near full-height privacy with a bit more coverage than a 5ft panel, without going right up to 6ft. It’s a common height for rear boundaries and garden sides where you want to reduce overlooking, cut down on draughts, and make the space feel more sheltered. We make these panels in-house using a traditional feather edge closeboard build, with overlapping boards to help keep the fence line looking solid.

The Ultra build is designed to be stiffer and better supported than standard duty. On this 5ft 6in high panel we use five 75 x 32mm backing rails, and the feather edge boards are nailed through to each rail. That extra rail makes a real difference on taller fence panels. It gives more fixing points across the height, helps reduce flex between rails, and supports the boards so they are less likely to move about when the wind gets up. Over a long run, that can help the fence stay looking straighter and more consistent.

This panel is unframed, which keeps fitting simple and avoids bulky side edges. It is made to sit neatly between posts, which is ideal when you want a clean, continuous line along the boundary. The top edge is finished with a weather capping strip. The cap helps shed rain away from the top of the boards, reducing the amount of water that sits on end grain and helping the fence cope better with the usual wet and dry cycles we get in the UK.

All timber is pressure treated for outdoor use. That treatment gives protection through the wood, but good installation still matters. Keep the bottom edge up off the ground so it is not constantly sitting in damp soil or splashback. If your ground levels vary, set a consistent base line with a gravel board and step the fence where needed, rather than letting the panel touch the ground in places. If you ever cut the panel down to suit an awkward bay, it’s worth treating any fresh cut ends with a suitable end-grain preservative.

A gravel board is a sensible partner for a tall closeboard panel. It helps protect the lower edge, keeps the fence looking sharper at the base, and can make maintenance easier along paths and borders. You can browse options in our gravel boards range, with concrete gravel boards being a strong choice for damp ground or exposed boundaries where you want maximum separation from moisture.

For best results, pair the panel with posts that match the height and conditions on site. Posts set straight and firmly are what stop tall panels feeling “wobbly”. If you are planning a full run, start with our fence posts page, including wooden fence posts for a traditional all-timber look or concrete fence posts if you prefer a low-maintenance structure.

Once installed level at the top and kept clear at the bottom, this 5ft 6in Ultra panel gives you a strong, tidy closeboard finish that suits everyday garden boundaries and stands up well to changeable weather.
