This 6ft x 4ft Ultra Heavy Duty Closeboard Fence Panel is a strong mid-height option for gardens where you want privacy without going full height. At 4ft tall it’s a popular choice for side boundaries, separating spaces within a garden, or creating a sheltered feel on patios and seating areas. We make these fence panels in-house using a traditional feather edge build, so you get the classic closeboard look with overlapping boards that help reduce gaps and soften wind and sight lines.

The Ultra build focuses on one thing that really matters in use: support. On this 6ft x 4ft size we use four 75 x 32mm backing rails, and every feather edge board is nailed through to the rails. The extra structure helps the boards stay held firmly across the height of the panel. That can mean fewer issues with movement in blustery weather, and a fence line that stays looking straighter over time. It also makes the panel feel more rigid when you lift it into place, which helps during fitting, especially when you’re working along a long run and want consistent spacing.

The panel is unframed, which keeps the design neat and practical. It is made to sit cleanly between posts, and it suits standard fencing layouts where panels drop into position without bulky edges. The top is finished with a weather capping strip. This is there to shed rain away from the top edge and reduce water sitting on the end grain of the boards, which is one of the areas timber can take a hammering if it is left exposed.

All timber in the panel is pressure treated for outdoor use. Treatment gives the wood protection through the section, but it does not replace good installation. Keep the panel clear of the ground and avoid letting soil build up against the bottom edge. If you ever need to trim a panel to suit an awkward bay, it is worth treating any fresh cut ends with a suitable end-grain preservative to keep protection where the timber is newly exposed.

For most fences, using a gravel board is a smart move. It lifts the panel away from damp ground, helps protect the bottom edge from splashback, and gives you a straighter visual line along the base of the fence. You can pair this panel with either timber or concrete gravel boards, depending on the look you want. Our gravel boards range includes wooden gravel boards for an all-timber finish and concrete gravel boards for maximum separation from moisture where the ground stays wet.

It’s also worth thinking about posts at the same time as panels. Closeboard panels feel best when they are supported by posts set straight and solid. If you are replacing older panels, check your post centres and make sure you have a true 6ft opening between posts, allowing a little clearance so the panel drops in without forcing it. For the right options, see our fence posts page, including wooden fence posts and concrete fence posts.

Fitted well, this Ultra panel gives you a strong, tidy closeboard finish that suits everyday boundaries and stands up well to changeable UK weather. It’s a sensible choice when you want something sturdier than standard duty, without adding unnecessary height to the fence line.
