This 6ft x 4ft Closeboard Fence Panel is a popular mid-height option for gardens where you want privacy without going full height. It works well on side boundaries, between neighbouring patios, or to divide areas within the garden such as seating and play spaces. The 4ft height gives good screening while still keeping the garden feeling fairly open.

We make these panels in-house using a traditional feather edge closeboard build. The face uses 18 feather edge boards at 125mm wide, overlapped and nailed onto 75 x 32mm backing rails. This size uses three rails, giving a solid spread of support across the panel height. That helps the boards stay held firmly and reduces the amount of flex you can sometimes get with lighter garden fence panels.

The panel is unframed, which makes it straightforward to fit between posts and keeps the edges clean in each bay. It also helps when you’re lining up a long run and want consistent gaps. The top edge is weather capped to help shed rain away from the top of the boards. It’s one of those details that keeps the panel looking better for longer, because it reduces water sitting on the timber where it’s most exposed.

All timber is pressure treated, with a brown finish. Treatment helps protect the timber through the wood, but good installation is still key. Keep the bottom edge up off the ground and avoid letting soil pile up against the boards. If you’re fitting on sloping ground, it’s usually better to step the run than to force panels down into the ground at one end. If you cut the width down to suit a tight bay, treat the fresh cut ends with a suitable end-grain preservative.

A gravel board is a sensible addition on most fences, including 4ft runs. It protects the lower edge from splashback and helps keep a straight base line, especially where the ground isn’t perfect. You can browse our gravel boards, with wooden gravel boards suiting an all-timber look and concrete gravel boards suiting damp ground and higher wear areas.
