Unframed means the panel does not have a complete perimeter frame around its edges. Our closeboard panels instead use overlapping feather edge boards fixed across 75 x 32mm horizontal backing rails, with capping along the top.
Unframed does not mean unsupported. On our closeboard fence panels, it means there is no complete timber frame running around all four edges of the panel.
The panel face is made from 18 overlapping feather edge boards, each nominally 125mm wide. These are fixed across horizontal backing rails measuring 75 x 32mm. The number of rails depends on the panel height and whether the panel is Standard or Ultra Heavy Duty.
A timber capping strip finishes the upper edge, but there are no bulky framed side sections like those used on our imported decorative panels. The finished closeboard panel is approximately 45mm deep.
For example, the 6ft Standard Closeboard Fence Panel uses four 75 x 32mm backing rails, while the equivalent Ultra Heavy Duty panel uses five. Both remain unframed.
This distinction is useful when replacing panels or choosing fixings because the edge of an unframed closeboard panel is different from the 45 x 45mm perimeter frame used on products such as Double Slatted and Hit & Miss panels.
