Waney lap uses a deliberately economical construction of relatively thin overlapping sawn boards and lighter supports. Closeboard uses thicker feather edge construction across substantial 75 x 32mm backing rails.
Our waney lap panels are typically the more economical option because they use a deliberately lighter overlap construction than our closeboard panels.
The horizontal waney-edge boards are nominally around 125mm wide by 4.7mm thick and overlap by approximately 25 to 40mm. Four vertical supports are fitted to the front and four to the rear, with 75 x 16mm timbers at the top and bottom of the front face and 16 x 45mm capping along the top. This arrangement produces continuous screening while keeping the construction relatively economical.
Our closeboard panels use a different build. Eighteen overlapping feather edge boards are fixed vertically across 75 x 32mm backing rails. Standard panels use three or four rails according to height, while Ultra Heavy Duty versions add another rail.
Both panel types are pressure treated and manufactured in-house by East Coast Fencing. The difference is therefore not simply one panel being treated and the other untreated. Waney lap achieves screening through lighter overlapping boards and support battens, while closeboard uses a more substantial board-and-rail construction.
