We manufacture our waney lap panels from overlapping horizontal sawn boards, nominally around 125mm wide by 4.7mm thick, with approximately 25–40mm overlap. The panels also use front and rear vertical supports, top and bottom timbers, capping and galvanised ring-shank nails.
East Coast Fencing waney lap panels are built from horizontal sawn waney-edge boards that overlap one another to create the familiar continuous face of an overlap panel. The individual boards are nominally around 125mm wide by 4.7mm thick and are installed with approximately 25–40mm of overlap.
The boards are held between a series of supports rather than simply being fixed at the outer edges. Our panels use four vertical support battens on the front and four on the rear. The front face also has 75 x 16mm horizontal timbers at the top and bottom, with a 16 x 45mm capping strip finishing the upper edge. Galvanised ring-shank nails are used throughout the assembly.
All of the timber is pressure treated before the components are assembled. Because the overlapping slats sit at an angle between the support layers, the finished panel is approximately 40mm deep even though each individual lap board is much thinner.
This construction also explains why a waney lap panel has a visibly different front and back. Decide which face you want to see before installation and keep that orientation consistent along the run.
