Waney lap panels are made from sawn natural timber with waney edges, so knots, edge shape, colour and small dimensional differences are expected. The lap-board dimensions and overlap are intentionally approximate rather than perfectly uniform.
Some variation is normal because our waney lap fence panels are manufactured from sawn natural timber rather than uniform machined slats.
The horizontal boards are nominally around 125mm wide by 4.7mm thick and are installed with approximately 25 to 40mm overlap. Those figures are intentionally approximate. Waney-edge timber retains natural variation along the edges, so the exact shape and appearance of one board can differ from the next.
Knots, changes in colour, irregular waney edges and small dimensional changes as the timber gains or loses moisture are therefore expected characteristics of this panel style. The pressure treatment also does not create a completely uniform decorative colour across every piece of timber.
The overlapping arrangement allows these naturally varied boards to form a continuous screened face without requiring every individual edge to be identical. This natural appearance is part of the traditional waney lap format and is different from the more regular appearance of semi-planed decorative fencing.
