The two faces look different because the support arrangement is not completely symmetrical. Both sides have vertical support battens, while the front also includes horizontal boards across the top and bottom.
The different front and back are a normal part of how we manufacture our waney lap fence panels, rather than a missing component or finishing fault.
The overlapping waney-edge boards are supported by four vertical battens on the front and four on the rear. The front face also has 75 x 16mm horizontal boards running across the top and bottom. A 16 x 45mm capping piece finishes the upper edge of the panel.
Because these supporting components remain visible, the two faces do not have an identical appearance. It is therefore worth deciding which way you want the panels to face before fixing the first one and then keeping the same orientation throughout the run.
The panels are assembled from pressure-treated timber and fixed using galvanised ring-shank nails. The horizontal lap boards are approximately 125mm wide by 4.7mm thick and overlap by around 25 to 40mm, while the support arrangement contributes to the finished panel depth of roughly 40mm.
