This 12 inch smooth concrete gravel board with hedgehog hole protects the bottom of a timber fence while deliberately leaving a wildlife access point through the boundary. It measures 6ft (1.83m) long and 12 inches (305mm) high, with a light grey smooth face and an opening formed within the concrete board.
For gardens where hedgehog movement is being considered as part of the fence design, using a purpose-made opening avoids the need to cut timber panels or improvise a gap beneath the fence after installation. The opening needs to remain accessible at ground level, so avoid positioning soil, edging, planting or stored materials where they would block the passage.
Away from the opening, the board performs the same job as a conventional concrete gravel board. It keeps the timber panel above clear of damp soil, places concrete at the most exposed part of the fence and reduces direct splashback onto the lower edge of the panel. The board is steel reinforced and vibration finished, with a depth of approximately 45 to 55mm.
At 305mm high, this is a substantial base board. Allow for that height when selecting the fence panels to sit above it and when setting out the finished fence line. The 1.83m board is intended for a standard-width bay and can be installed with appropriate concrete fence posts, provided the complete fencing arrangement is compatible.
