This 100 x 200mm x 2.4m pressure-treated softwood railway sleeper is intended for garden landscaping where a green/natural treated timber appearance is preferred. Its 100mm thickness and 200mm face make it suitable for substantial features such as raised planters, path and lawn edging, garden steps, simple seating and low-level retaining work. The sleeper is specified as UC3 pressure treated for exterior use.
The green treatment leaves more of the natural softwood character visually apparent than the brown version, so colour, grain and knots will vary from sleeper to sleeper. The treatment colour can also change as the timber weathers. These variations are normal for sawn softwood and are useful to understand before ordering if the finished project will leave large areas of timber exposed.
At 2.4m long, the sleeper gives useful flexibility when setting out longer borders or rectangular beds because fewer joints may be needed. Mark the complete layout before cutting, particularly around corners and returns. If the sleeper is shortened, treat the fresh end grain with a suitable preservative before fitting. For stacked work, stagger joints where practical and make sure the base is firm enough to keep the first course level.
Where sleepers are used to retain soil, plan for water movement rather than simply trapping wet ground behind the timber. Drainage, anchoring and the overall height of the feature should all be considered according to the site. For straightforward borders and raised beds, accurate setting out and a level base usually make the later courses much easier to align.
Suitable long screws can be used for certain timber-to-timber joints.
