Lay the sleeper flat and each course contributes approximately 100mm of height with a broad 200mm footprint. This arrangement works particularly well for low edging, broad borders and projects where you want the top surface of the timber to feel substantial.

Turn the sleeper on edge and each course contributes approximately 200mm of height. This makes more efficient use of each sleeper when building raised beds, taller borders and level changes.

Do not choose solely by counting courses.

An on-edge sleeper has a narrower base, so projects carrying meaningful soil pressure may require more restraint. A flat sleeper has a broad footprint, but it can still move if placed directly onto poorly prepared ground.

Foundation preparation, drainage, joints and fixings matter whichever orientation you select.

For straightforward decorative landscaping, orientation is mainly a practical and visual decision. For retaining structures, taller beds and significant changes in ground level, the complete support system matters far more than simply whether the sleeper is flat or on edge.
