This 100 x 200mm x 2.4m pressure-treated softwood railway sleeper is a substantial landscaping timber for raised beds, garden borders, steps, edging, seating and other outdoor timber projects. The 200mm face creates a broad visible edge, while the 100mm thickness gives the sleeper the chunky section commonly wanted for landscaping. This version has a brown pressure-treated finish and is specified as UC3 treated timber.
The 2.4m length is useful where long, continuous runs are preferable to multiple short pieces. It can be laid flat to present the 200mm face, turned on edge where the 100mm face better suits the design, or cut into shorter sections for corners, returns and smaller features. Before cutting, set out the project carefully so joints fall in sensible positions and waste is kept under control. Any freshly cut end exposes untreated timber fibres, so treat the cut end with a suitable end-grain preservative before installation.
For raised beds and low retaining features, drainage and ground preparation matter as much as the timber itself. Start from a firm, reasonably level base and avoid creating a situation where water is permanently trapped against the sleeper. Where several courses are stacked, stagger the joints where practical rather than creating one continuous vertical joint through the structure. Taller or load-bearing landscaping features may need additional anchoring or support appropriate to the particular site.
Fixing method depends on the build. Natural softwood should not be expected to look completely uniform. Knots, grain variation, small surface checks and differences in colour are normal characteristics of sawn landscaping timber, and the brown treatment can also vary slightly from piece to piece.
