Closeboard and waney lap are our most closed panel constructions for privacy-led boundaries. Picket fencing remains deliberately open, while double slatted, hit and miss and Omega panels provide varying levels of filtered screening.
For a privacy-led boundary, start with our closeboard fence panels or waney lap fence panels. Both use overlapping timber to create a continuous screened face rather than deliberately leaving repeated viewing gaps.
Closeboard panels use 18 overlapping feather edge boards fixed vertically across substantial backing rails. Waney lap uses thinner sawn boards laid horizontally with approximately 25 to 40mm overlap. Their construction differs, but both are designed around solid garden screening.
Picket fence panels are at the opposite end of the range. Their 13 x 75mm pales have approximately 70mm gaps, so light and views through the fence are intentional.
Our decorative styles sit between those two approaches. Double slatted panels use two layers of battens with approximately 40mm gaps. Hit and miss panels stagger 100 x 5mm slats on opposite faces to interrupt direct sight lines while retaining openings. Omega panels combine a hit and miss lower screen with an open curved lattice top.
Panel height affects how much of the boundary is covered, but the construction determines whether that coverage is solid, filtered or deliberately open.
