Measure the timber cross-section rather than relying on its length or appearance. Our wallplate uses a 100 x 47mm rectangular section, while our MOT rail uses an 87 x 38mm rectangular section.
The most reliable way to distinguish these two rectangular timbers is to measure the cross-section.
Our 2.4m wallplate measures 100 x 47mm. The corresponding 2.4m MOT rail measures 87 x 38mm. They can therefore have the same overall length while being clearly different in both width and thickness.
This matters during repairs because a piece of pressure-treated rectangular timber should not be identified from length alone. Similar-looking fence frameworks can use different sections, and replacing an existing member is more reliable when all three dimensions are checked.
The MOT rail is also available in a longer 3.6m format, while our wallplate range includes other lengths using the same 100 x 47mm section. Changing length does not change the identifying cross-section of the respective product.
Both sit within our square rails selection. Measure the timber being removed before ordering rather than assuming that any rectangular fencing rail of a similar length is equivalent.
