Laid flat, the sleeper sits 100mm high with the broader 200mm face horizontal. This gives a wider footprint and is useful for low edging, steps, seating bases and the first course of some raised features. Turned on edge, the sleeper stands 200mm high, allowing each course to build height more quickly while using the 100mm face as the narrower base.
The orientation therefore changes both the visible height and the footprint of the timber. For example, two flat courses produce approximately 200mm of timber height before allowing for joints or site variation, while two courses on edge produce approximately 400mm. The appropriate arrangement depends on the feature being built, the ground preparation and how the sleepers will be fixed or supported.
