Are knots, surface checks and colour variation normal on East Coast Fencing railway sleepers?

Quick Answer

Yes. Our railway sleepers are sawn pressure-treated softwood, so knots, grain variation, small surface checks and differences in treatment colour are normal timber characteristics.

Yes. Knots, grain variation, small surface checks and differences in treatment shade are normal characteristics of our railway sleepers.

The sleepers are sawn softwood measuring 100 x 200mm x 2.4m and are pressure treated for exterior use. They are timber landscaping products rather than smooth, colour-matched manufactured components, so individual pieces should not be expected to look identical.

On the green/natural railway sleeper, the treatment leaves much of the underlying grain and natural timber character visible. Brown-treated sleepers start with a darker treatment colour, but variations in shade can still occur from one piece to another.

The initial treatment colour also changes gradually as the timber weathers outdoors. Natural differences in knots and grain remain part of the material rather than being removed by pressure treatment.

The important fixed specifications are the 100 x 200mm section, 2.4m length and treated softwood construction. Visual timber character will naturally vary within those dimensions.
