Double slatted panels use narrow horizontal battens on both faces, while hit and miss panels use wider slats alternated between the front and rear. Both provide screening while retaining openings through the panel.
The two designs both provide filtered screening, but they achieve it with very different timber layouts.
Our double slatted fence panels use horizontal 8 x 45mm battens arranged on both faces of a 45 x 45mm frame. The gaps between the battens are approximately 40mm. Looking through the two layers creates the characteristic closely layered slatted appearance while retaining visible openings.
Our hit and miss fence panels use much wider 100 x 5mm grooved horizontal slats. These are fixed alternately to opposite faces of a 45 x 45mm frame, so a board on one side covers much of the direct sight line through the gap on the other.
Both imported ranges are manufactured at a true UK 6ft width of 1.828m and have an overall depth of 45mm. Neither design is completely solid. The practical choice is therefore between the finer, repeated batten pattern of double slatting and the broader alternating-board pattern of hit and miss construction.
