A gravel board sits at the bottom of the fence line and takes the brunt of splashback, damp soil and strimmer knocks. This 3.0m x 150mm timber gravel board is a simple, practical way to lift your fence panels clear of the ground, helping to reduce rot at the bottom edge and keeping the run looking tidy. It is pressure treated and finished green for outdoor use, with a 150mm face and a 22mm thickness.
The 3.0m length is commonly used where you are running longer bays or building a continuous run with rails. It can also be useful for landscaping and edging jobs where you want a long, straight timber board. If you are working to standard panel widths, check your bay sizes before you buy. It is often easier to plan your post centres around the board length than to trim lots of small pieces on site.
Fitting is straightforward. Gravel boards are normally fixed between posts at ground level, with the fence panel sitting on top. Keep the board slightly above the soil where possible so it can dry out after rain. If the garden slopes, you can step the boards along the run to follow the ground in neat stages. This tends to look cleaner than trying to force a board into a curve.
When fixing to timber fence posts, use exterior grade screws or nails and aim for a solid fixing at each end. If you are running rails, you can also fix through the rails into the board for extra stability. The key is to keep the board straight and level relative to the fence line so your panels sit properly and the finished run does not look wavy.
Pressure treatment helps timber cope outdoors, but it is still worth looking after any fresh cut ends. If you cut the board down, apply an end grain preservative to the cut face before installation.
