This 1.83m x 150mm wooden gravel board is designed to sit beneath a standard-width fence panel, creating a sacrificial timber barrier between the panel and the ground. At 1.83m long, 150mm high and 22mm thick, it is particularly suited to conventional 6ft fencing bays where a timber base is preferred to concrete.
Keeping the bottom of a timber panel away from damp soil reduces prolonged moisture exposure and rain splashback around the part of the fence most vulnerable to decay. The gravel board also provides a straight lower edge for the panel to sit above and can help produce a neater finish where soil, lawn or planting meets the fence line.
This brown version is pressure treated for outdoor use and works naturally alongside brown-treated fence panels and other fencing timber. Timber gravel boards are also straightforward to cut if a bay is slightly shorter than the full 1.83m length. Where a board is cut, the freshly exposed end should be treated before installation rather than leaving untreated end grain exposed outdoors.
When fitting between wooden fence posts, check the actual distance between the posts before cutting or fixing the board. Set it straight so the panel above has an even base, and use fixings suitable for exterior timber. On sloping ground, stepping individual bays usually gives a cleaner result than trying to bend the board to follow every change in level.
A wooden gravel board is a good option where easy cutting, a timber appearance and relatively simple handling are priorities. For boundaries exposed to persistent ground moisture or frequent knocks from garden equipment, a concrete alternative may be more appropriate.
