Cant rails are used as the horizontal supporting framework behind traditional site-built feather edge fencing. Their characteristic angled profile is intended to receive and support the vertical overlapping boards, making them different from a general rectangular timber rail.
Our 2.4m cant rail is sold as a 125 x 47mm 2EX section. It is pressure treated for exterior use and can be cut to the measured distance between the supporting posts.
The framework should be established before the feather edge boards are fitted. Set the posts first, measure the actual span and cut the rails around the real bay rather than assuming a nominal width. Keeping the rails level and their vertical positions consistent gives the boards repeatable fixing lines along the run.
Once the framework is secure, the feather edge boards are fixed vertically with a consistent overlap. The rail therefore performs a structural supporting job within the fence rather than acting as decorative trim. The number and position of rails depends on the fence design and board length, so there is no single rail layout that should be copied onto every installation.
Different lengths are available within our cant rails range. Choose the length after setting out the post positions, particularly on bespoke boundaries where the bays are not all the same width.
