Can a 38 x 16mm trellis batten be used as a fence rail?

Quick Answer

No. Our 38 x 16mm trellis batten is intentionally a lightweight component for trellis, lattice and light screening. It is not intended to replace the larger rails that form the main supporting framework of a fence.

No. Our 1.83m x 38 x 16mm Trellis Batten is intentionally a lightweight component and should not be treated as a replacement for a main fence rail.

The batten measures 38 x 16mm and is supplied for trellis repairs, bespoke lattice and lightweight screening. Within a trellis design, multiple battens create the repeated horizontal, vertical or crossed pieces while the completed trellis is supported by sound posts, framing or another suitable support.

That is a different role from the larger timber used as the principal framework of fencing. For comparison, our loose fence-panel backrail uses a 75 x 32mm section, while MOT rails use an 87 x 38mm rectangular section and cant rails use a 125 x 47mm 2EX profile. These products should not be treated as interchangeable simply because they are all lengths of pressure-treated timber.

The trellis batten is therefore the appropriate component when repairing or constructing compatible lattice and lighter screens. Where the project requires the main horizontal support of a fence, select the appropriate rail from the square rails or cant rails ranges instead of substituting the much smaller trellis section.
