How this railway sleeper calculator works

This calculator is designed for our 100mm x 200mm x 2.4m railway sleepers. It uses your total linear meterage, required finished height and chosen sleeper orientation to estimate how many sleepers you need.

If the sleepers are laid flat, each course gives 100mm of height. If the sleepers are laid on edge, each course gives 200mm of height. The calculator rounds the number of courses up, then works out how many full 2.4m sleepers are needed per course.

How to measure linear meterage

Linear meterage is the total length around the project. For a raised bed, add every side together. For example, a bed measuring 2.4m long by 1.2m wide has a total linear meterage of 7.2m.

Sleeper orientation guide

With 100mm x 200mm railway sleepers, the orientation changes the height gained from each course. Laid flat gives a lower 100mm course height. Laid on edge gives a taller 200mm course height.
